KUALA LUMPUR: The decision to postpone the purchase of Eurocopter helicopters will only be reviewed when the economic situation improves, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak
Procurement of the 12 helicopters, worth about RM1.6bil, was put off due to the current economic condition.
"We have signed a Letter of Intent with Eurocopter."
"Mindef has taken into consideration its needs and Eurocopter presented the best option among all the bidders."
“Priority will be given to projects which will have a big impact on the country’s development and people,” he said after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Felda and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) on the Edible Garden project here yesterday.
Najib, who is also Finance Minister, was responding to a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report calling on the Government to reconsider postponing the helicopter purchase although the Nuri helicopters they would replace could be used until 2015.
“We can reconsider, but we will wait until the economic situation improves,” Najib said.
