Healthy bookings for LIMA ’09 indicate that this year’s exhibition is poised to live up to its established reputation as a key business platform for the region. 16 country pavilions have conveyed their strong interest to participate at the show with Italy, Russia, France, Germany, The United States, Netherlands, Korea, Czech Republic amongst the early confirmations. More are expected to formalize their participation before the end of the first quarter.
Anchor companies include Finmeccanica, Rosoboronexport comprising Sukhoi, MIG, and Cosmos, MBDA, EADS, BAE Systems, Bombardier, Hawker Pacific, Navantia, Agusta Westland, Eurocopter, Fincantieri, L3 Communications, Lockheed Martin, Atlas Elektronik and ITT. Heading the list for Malaysia are the National Aerospace Defence Industry, Boustead Naval Shipyard, Sapura, Glenn Marine, CTRM, Zetro Aerospace and Satang Jaya.
Delegate Invitations to almost 60 countries have already begun to be sent out by the Ministry of Defence and related security and civil departments. LIMA is expected to surpass the 285 delagation target set in 2007 through increased invitations by Heads of The Royal Malaysian Police, The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, The Royal Malaysian Customs and The Fire and Rescue Department. This is a conscious effort by the Government of Malaysia to add more depth and spectrum to the existing trade delegates dominated by the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Navy and Army.
The LIMA’09 team was at the seventh edition of Aero India 2009. The event got off to a spectacular start at the Yelahanka air force base, Bangalore. The air show was flagged off by the Defence Minister A K Antony in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minister B.S Yeddyuarappa.
Attending from Malaysia was Deputy Chief of Air Force, Lieutenant General Dato’ Seri Bashir Abu Bakar and accompanied by Major General Dato’ Ismail Ibrahim (Assistant Chief of Staff, Plans, MAF) was warmly welcomed by the Chief of Indian Air Force.

The presence of the Malaysian delegates and the LIMA organisers received good response amongst the companies in Aero India for LIMA’09, especially the local Indian companies.
Spain’s Navantia announced last week that it had commenced sea trials for the second Scorpene submarine being delivered to Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) under a joint contract it is fulfilling French shipyard DCNS.
The sea trials of KD Tun Razak began on 11 February in waters off Cartagena and is expected to be delivered in October. This first phase of trials will last until the end of April.
